Alcazaba de Malaga
Alcazaba de Malaga
Malaga's incredible hilltop Alcazaba, the Arabic word for "citadel", is a Moorish fortification overlooking Malaga's port that once served as the palace of the city's governors back in Malaga's days under Spain's once-powerful Islamic rule. Malag's Alcazaba, the best-preserved alcazaba in Spain, dates back to the 8th century, with subsequent parts built for King Badis of Granada around the 11th century. Above the Alcazaba fortress-palace, you can find the Gibralfaro Castle, the pinnacle of this captivating, centuries-old and historic compound which commands incredible views across the whole city.
Plus, next to the Alcazaba's entrance you'll find even more vestiges of Malaga's lengthy history in the form of a 2nd-century Roman theater, which was discovered and excavated just a few decades ago!
